LUTON PETANQUE CLUB 2022
Last year was a very busy and successful one for LPC and its members. Some 40 medals trophies and cups were won by LPC members at the Summer Sunday competitions and the Three Shires and Pennant Leagues.
The Plaiters won the Three Shires 1st Division Runners up Cup which is effectively winning the league as no-one ever beats Orange Tree B (who are mostly made up of Baldock Town players – a team in the top ten of Europe or the petanque equivalent of Man City).atters won
Mad Hatters won the Three Shires 3rd Division Cup and Blockers won the 3rd Division Runners Up Cup. Both teams will be promoted to the 2nd Division for 2023.
In the Pennant League Projets came top of the 2nd Division and will be promoted to Division One next year. The Projets also were Runners Up for the Pennant Cup. Aviators won the Pennant Challenge Cup.
In January the piste was still very busy with Tuesday and Sunday social meetings. In addition to this the Regional Winter League had moved to Luton on Thursday evenings after some difficult times at both Arlesey and Ickleford venues. This event was called Winter Madness and it justified its name when playing on an ice laden piste when the boules could scoot off in any direction. This carried on until Mid-March.
Throughout the winter two leagues were organised by Three Shires and Pennant leagues and LPC hosted some league matches and both finals days in March. Our club provided 3 teams for both Pennant and Three Shires Leagues.
When the Winter League had finished the Summer League started a few weeks later and LPC entered 4 teams in the Three Shires and 2 teams in the Pennant Leagues.
During the summer the 2021/22 Euro Cup matches took place and Luton A team won their way through to the Semi-Finals at Oxshott in July. The first time a Luton team has reached this level in the Euro Cup competition.
The Euro Cup 2022/23 is underway and a Luton team went to Bancroft Park in November but lost the match and will be playing in the Plate competition during 2023.
Throughout the year LPC hosted some 10 all day tournaments including Euro Cup Semi Finals and Snowboule. This is a higher proportion of these events than previous years and is mainly because many of the Chiltern Region venues have been lost over the last three years. Both Three Shires League and the Region are very grateful for the use of the Luton facility.
In September Petanque England organised the annual Inter Regional competition which took place at Pakefield Pontins in Suffolk. Chiltern Region won the Championship section. LPC members were involved in both the Championship and Challenge Leagues of this competition and provided 8 members for all stages of the competition. Second only to Baldock Town.
LPC has 23 PE members which is more than any other club in Chiltern Region.
To conclude the year LPC organised and hosted Luton Snowboule where some 35 people attended and raised substantial funds for the club.
A happy and successful new year to all our members
